I actually think poetry is having something of a resurgence at the moment – if you look in the nooks and crannies of Medium, you’ll find many great examples of it! I started writing poetry around the age of 7. (I ran into my second grade teacher many years ago at a school reunion, and she had a scrapbook including an old poem of mine, about snowflakes, I think.) And yes, I wrote poetry, and song lyrics, all through my teens and up to university – although sadly, studying an Honours degree in English literature intimidated me out of it for a long while – it doesn’t help to compare your own attempts to the published and polished pieces written by the greats of poetry! Came back into it some years ago through music and songwriting – this piece is actually a song lyric; I have also composed music to go with it. Now I love playing round with poetry – particularly storytelling poetry – as it’s a welcome relief from the dryness of the day job!
