I played the descant and tenor recorder in primary school – I remember stretching my fingers across the tenor recorder when I was in second class. In high school, I played the oboe from about Year 9 to Year 12 – got to take part in music camps and secondary schools concerts at town halls and even the Sydney Opera House – but after playing it at my own high school graduation, I shelved the instrument, and have hardly touched it again (those double reeds are such a bitch to play!).

I still have an old plastic descant recorder, but my husband runs a mile if I ever take it out (bad memories from his own primary school days!). I’ve thought for a long time about getting a lovely mellow wooden instrument, as I do love a well-played recorder. But until them, I guess I’ll stick with the piano and uke.
