Kay – I’m speaking with the (slightly feigned) cynicism of someone who has practiced law (such a strange concept) for nearly 25 years. During my time in the local courts practising criminal law, much of it was rough justice. And in the civil sphere, it sometimes comes down to how you play the game. That said, most of the lawyers I know are good and honourable people, trying to do their best within a system which is constantly being reconstructed. And there is no absolute truth – it often comes down to who is telling the story, and who is convincing enough to be believed. I’ve been involved in many contentious and complicated cases, in which I’ve had to accept I will never know the ‘truth’. But I’m glad to hear you still have hope for it, no matter how imperfect!
