One More Time, With Feeling: β€œI Am”

A Spoken Word Poem, With Audio

Thanks once again to The Goat @The Scene & Heard, one of my early spoken word poems has been dredged from the slush files of Medium. This one was inspired while listening to a session of spoken word poetry at the Sydney Writers’ Festival last year, when I realised that while poets of colour were taking the stage, the audience was predominantly white. Afterwards, I stepped back into the foyer, found a quiet spot by the wall, and started writing the first lines of this poem. The sentiment may be familiar to anyone of ambiguous ethnic appearance who has ever been asked the question β€œWhere do you come from?”

Oh, and I also recorded bonus audio.

Enjoy.
