Tess – your sea sounds wonderful! I also have the ocean about five minutes walk from where I live, in the heart of the inner city – just down the stairs at the back of the apartment complex, and onto the road – and there it is; the expanse of Sydney Harbour! Not quite as wild and wonderful as your sea sounds – but still beautiful in its urban way, with the seagulls and cockatoos soaring overhead, the strolling ibises foraging for stray pies and chips (the famous Harry’s Cafe De Wheels pie cart is right near the naval base) – and even, very occasionally, the stray seal frolicking close to shore. Days when I get my act together and walk to work, I walk past the ocean, up the stairs to the Art Gallery, and across the Domain (the Royal Botanic Gardens is a few steps to the side) – and now I wonder, why have I fallen out of the habit of doing so? I was wondering where to find joy again – but you’ve reminded me – it’s all there, just past my back steps, and all I need do is take a walk!
