Thanks for the tip, Louise! I’ve done a few songwriting classes with Pat Pattison of Berklee College of Music, and he uses a similar tip for songwriting — but instead uses three boxes: the first, introducing your theme; the second, development; and the third, conclusion. As he said, too many second verses of songs just restate the first verse; to bring maximum clout, you need to tell a story, and show where it moves to. It’s great for story-telling songs, but also works more generally. When I went back and looked at some of my early songs, I found I was often doing it naturally. It’s all about bringing out the storyteller!
