Yes, I remember being twenty-something or thereabouts, and having boyfriends tell me how needy their last girlfriend was, and how it made me think I had better not show too much emotion, for fear of being considered needy too. Those early relationships can leave deep scars – and emotional neglect or abuse is harder to define, or even acknowledge, to the insecure young female psyche. It can be hard to recall once you hit your groove and self-resilience, and others’ weakness starts to look pathetic (particularly if you’re closing yourself down to that reminder). Thanks for acknowledging the truth of so many people’s (not just women and girls) lives – we need to work out for ourselves what it is we need, and need to be, in relationship.
